Motorcycle test rides can be an incredible tool during the buying process. A proper test ride can ultimately make or break your decision to purchase! However, it isn’t as simple as hopping on a bike at the dealership and going for a spin. There are a few things you need to know in order to have a successful and stress-free test ride experience.

1. Schedule in Advance

First off, make sure to call ahead and schedule a time for your test ride. Not all dealerships offer them, so it gives you a chance to learn about their specific policy. It also shows them that you’re a serious buyer! They’ll be able to make sure the model you’re interested in is available and ready to go.

When you call, go ahead and ask any questions regarding the ride and what to expect.

2. Bring What You Need

Next, when you go to try out a motorcycle, there are a few things you’ll need to have with you. Don’t forget to bring your driver’s license with proof of a motorcycle endorsement and proof of insurance. You will also need to have your own riding gear, including a helmet! Check the weather before you go and dress accordingly.

3. Get Comfortable Before You Ride

When you arrive at the dealership, you’ll want to take time to get acquainted with the motorcycle you’re testing out before you even start the engine. You’ll need to make sure it’s a good fit before you get on the road.

Make sure the motorcycle complements your height, weight, arm span, and skill level. You should be completely comfortable on the bike before you begin riding. Check that you have proper visibility and you can safely put both feet on the ground. Getting on and off the motorcycle should also feel comfortable!

In some situations, adjustments can be made to make the motorcycle accommodate you better. However, it’s also possible for that particular bike to not be the right fit for you. Don’t try to push it! If it doesn't feel right, ask to try something else.

4. Consider Your Specific Needs

As you prepare for your test ride, think about what the motorcycle’s primary purpose will be once you buy it. For example, if you’re looking for an option that would work well as a daily commuter, pay attention to the comfort and safety features. You want the model you choose to completely complement its purpose.

5. Be Critical of Your Likes and Dislikes

It’s easy to get swept away by the sheer awesomeness of riding a motorcycle. During the test ride, it’s important to be critical of both the good and the bad. Pay attention to the small details and be honest with yourself!

Going on a test ride can be a very critical part of the buying process. Our team at Harley-Davidson® of Fargo would love to help you find the perfect motorcycle. Visit us in West Fargo, ND, where we are proud to serve the Grand Forks and Jamestown communities.
